The Stinging Fly literary magazine has brought out a short-story anthology to celebrate twenty years of publishing.
One of my own stories, Becoming Invisible, was published in their 1998 issue.
I am very happy to say they are including it in their anthology.
It’s so hard to believe I wrote this story twenty years ago.
There’s been a lot of life in between – too much to write about here!
But it’s been a lovely surprise to get reacquainted with my old writing self and to realise how much has changed and how much has stayed the same.
BECOMING INVISIBLE
When I first reread the story I couldn’t remember reading it.
Then I remembered showing it to my late mother who used to read my stories and check for typos and correct my disastrous punctuation.
She loved the story and at the time I wrote it she was about the age of the main character.
The character is a widow who finds she has ‘disappeared’ since the death of her husband.
In the twenty years that have passed since I wrote the story, I’ve had to realise that I myself am now around the age of the character I wrote about.
A lot has changed in those twenty years.
Yet I think that maybe some things have also stayed the same!
I wonder if like this character I becoming invisible?
If so it’s my own fault.
In recent years I have tended to stay away from events.
But that is changing – the Galway launch is today and I have been invited to read Becoming Invisible at the celebration and I am really looking forward to taking part.
